NIHR CLAHRCs - World class research making a difference

On this page you can read a short brochure of national NIHR CLAHRC case studies. The document was developed by CLAHRC East Midlands on behalf of all 13 NIHR CLAHRCs.

NIHR CLAHRCS have high impact in terms of implementation of research findings to save lives, add value and promote partnerships with industry.

For instance, NIHR CLAHRC South West Peninsula facilitated the implementation of the CRASH trials of tranexamic acid in major trauma and other situations where haemorrhage can be life threatening. Estimates suggest its worldwide use will prevent up to 100,000 deaths annually, with particularly strong evidence of cost-effectiveness in developed countries.

Other examples from NIHR CLAHRCs’ impact – included in the document - are wide ranging and cover the identification, management and prevention of common mental and physical conditions across the life course.

CLAHRC East Midlands case studies include:

  • The Leicester Self Assessment and Walking Away from Diabetes - identifying those at-risk from type 2 diabetes, and helping to prevent its onset (pp 5-9)
  • IMPAKT - a software tool for GPs that identifies patients at risk from early onset Chronic Kidney Disease and provides resources for their management (pp 14-15)
  • Emergency Care and Acute Illness - reducing hospital admissions (pp 18-19)
  • Individual Placement and Support - helping people with long term mental health issues back into work (pp 36-37)
